Our team of vets pride themselves on offering a comprehensive first opinion service. As well as offering our emergency service, we can offer the following services either in our dedicated unit with excellent facilities or at the comfort of your yard or home.

  • We can provide all the necessary vaccines required to help keep your horse or pony fit and healthy. Our experienced vets can also work with you to ensure requirements are met for the disciplines you may compete in.

Health plans can also be arranged working through the calendar year to advise management changes that ensure your horse/pony remains in ideal condition. In-house worm egg counts can be performed with the results obtained on the same, or next day allowing us to work closely and advise on appropriate worming programmes.

  • Our state of the art digital X-Ray machine can provide excellent quality images either on your yard or at the practice. Obtaining these images enables our vets to liaise with specialists directly and work with professionals such as farriers or physiotherapists.

  • Our excellent equipment experience and interest in this area allows us to work with you to provide routine dentistry work. We have a good relationship with local equine dental technicians and have the facility to host clinics for more advanced dentistry work, performed by a visiting veterinary surgeon.

  • We provide both 2 and 5 stage pre-purchase examinations. We understand the complexity of purchasing a horse of pony and, by working with you, we hope to help you make an informed decision.

  • Our newly refurbished large animal room has a modern set of stocks allowing for safe and efficient handling of your mare.

We are able to offer detailed ultrasound scans of the mare’s reproductive tract. Ultrasound scans can be performed to investigate poor performance caused by unwanted oestrus behaviour. Pre breeding scans can be offered to allow us to identify where your mare is in her cycle, allowing for either timing of artificial insemination or covering by a stallion. Pregnancy diagnosis can be performed and we suggest that three ultrasound examinations are carried out.

    1) The first exam scan should be performed at approximately 14-15 days after insemination or the last day of covering by a stallion. At this stage, the embryonic vesicle is not fixed to the uterus wall enabling identification and reduction of twin pregnancies.

    2) The second ultrasound scan should be performed at approximately 21 days. At this stage, the embryo should have been implanted into the uterine wall and suitably developing.

    3) The third scan is often known as the “Heart Beat” scan and is performed 28-30 days. After 35 days of pregnancy the endometrial cup is formed and, if the mare loses her pregnancy after this stage, it is unlikely she will come back into oestrus or achieve pregnancy again during that breeding season.

Late pregnancy ultrasound scans are difficult to perform as often the pregnancy will be sitting down in the abdomen. Diagnosis can then be achieved by either manual palpation, transabdominal scan or blood testing.

Pregnancy diagnosis can also be carried out using blood tests and this method is advised for small pony breeds and Shetlands.

  • Builth Vets run their own 24-hour emergency care, offering prompt assistance with a familiar face. We understand that emergency work, for example a colic, is often an extremely stressful time for both owner and animal. Therefore, we strive to ensure the best outcome is achieved in a swift effective manner, with the horse’s best interest at heart.
