Pyometra Awareness

Canine Pyometra

The word pyometra means pus-filled uterus and unfortunately, this emergency condition is often seen in practice.

Hormonal changes affecting the uterus make the risk of infection more likely. We tend to see pyometras two to eight weeks after a bitch has finished her season. Bacteria such as E. coli, enters the womb and causes an infection.

If left untreated a pyometra will cause severe dehydration, septicaemia and death.

Symptoms

Common symptoms include

  • Lethargy

  • Loss of appetite

  • Vaginal discharge

  • Licking back end

  • Abdominal distention

  • Increased drinking and urinating

Diagnosis

After asking questions about your dog’s behavior and the date of her last season the vet will diagnose the pyometra with an ultrasound scan, which will show an abnormal fluid filled uterus.

Treatment

Bitches suffering pyometras will be put on a drip to treat dehydration before having emergency surgery to remove the infected uterus. This surgery is similar to spaying, but the risks are much greater. The uterus is at risk from bursting making the infection much worse. Patients will require antibiotics, pain relief and lots of rest to get better.

Prevention

It is thought as many as one in four older bitches will suffer from a pyometra; This can be easily prevented by having your bitch spayed.
